Tees-side Model Flying Club Annual Airshow 2006

The weekend of the 3rd and 4th of June 2006 saw the annual Tees-side Model Flying Club airshow at their superb flying site at Drovers Lane, Redmarshal.

Cleveland Model Helicopter Club supported the event by putting up a stand displaying various helicopters from small indoor electric to large IC pod and boom 3D aerobatic machines right through to the two large scale Chinook models of Martin and Richard and Darren's Wren Turbine powered Fury Extreme.

Throughout the day displays of 3D helicopter flying were done by club members Martin Heward and Darren Clark flying their Raptor 90's and 50's.

The fast jets were the real show stoppers with jaw dropping displays of a brightly coloured Eurofighter and an F-15 Eagle being the highlights. Lightning fast low passes and vertical climbs along with slow high alpha passes showing the capabilities of these fantastic machines. Powered by miniature jet turbine engines and burning Jet A-1 aircraft fuel the sound and smell made these models appear even more realistic.

But the pilots performing the loop the loops and death defying feats had their feet firmly on the ground as all the planes were radio controlled models.

Pilots from across the country joined local enthusiasts at the Teesside Model Flying Club's annual air show over the weekend.

Spectators were treated to jaw dropping acrobatic displays that saw the carefully made model planes and helicopters loop and twist and dive through the sky.

Club chairman Keith Evans from Hartburn said: "We hope that the show will get more people interested in model planes and people of all ages are welcome to join the club. We are especially looking to get more youngsters involved."

One of the club's youngest members is Adam Cumbor, from Great Ayton.

The 14-year-old Stokesley School pupil was invited to open the show as he has recently qualified to fly at show standard. He said: "This was my first show, so I was a bit nervous. But I really enjoyed it."

The two-day show was held on a field at Drovers Lane, Redmarshal, which the club bought for flying practice.

* Training is done mainly on Tuesday nights. For more information contact Tom Jones on 01642 640710.

The USAAF Model Aircraft Display Team put on a realistic display with their P47D Thunderbolt 'Rat a Dat', their A24 Banshee and their large scale C47D Dakota Skytrain. Some of these aircraft were even used in the filming of Steven Spielberg's series 'Band of Brothers'.

Large Model Association

The Large Model Association had a stand and a few models on display including a huge Nordair Arctic Skyvan. Paul Robinson and James Morris had two enormous half scale Pitts Special aerobatic machines. Unfortunately James was unable to fly at the weekend and Paul's model wasn't quite ready for a public display. Those of us who stayed late on Saturday evening though got to see it take to the sky though.

The BMFA also had a small stand and were giving away information and selling memorabilia including patches, badges etc to promote model flying in the United Kingdom.
